The Nude Project

polaroid brown film

Time to BREAK THROUGH!

On my desk there's a book of <<Desk-Top Mood Maker>>, it says:
Take a risk! Do something different!

I am been eagerly crying for a break through and then my 27th birthday came...
What have I done for the past 27 years???
The flame inside my heart keep burning and burning everytime when I attend church service,
I am just desperate so so so desperate for a break through!

So after my birthday, I told my boyfriend my plan of  nude photography and he shall be the photographer. He is extremely supportive to any of my projects which I can't find that in anyone else. Before the first nude photo shooting session in our house, he murmured:
" Am I ready to let the world see my partner's naked photo?"

Come on babe, it's just a nude photo!
We were worrying how my family and friends or those who know me would react to my nude photos. But the reason I want to do this project is to break through myself,
and everyone else's mindset - this is not a PORNOGRAPHY.

Growing up in an Asian background, we often get "excited" and over react towards nudity.
On the contrary, nudity is a very common subject in western culture.
Why can't I do this?

I am just a normal person who live a normal life
if I care what my friends and family would think of me,.
I am so gonna do this and I don't care what others would comment about my big butt
and fat cellulite legs, this is me! The real me!

There is nothing else to be afraid of in this world after doing this project,
because I need to break through for myself, and not anyone else.

My boyfriend gave me a very good encouragement on my nude project :

And when the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked;
and they sewed fig leaves together,
made themselves aprons.

Genesis 3:7

That's the idea. Before Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge,
they had no shame for their naked body.
Sometimes, are our eyes opened too wide to see and accept everything
that is interpreted by the media?
Why are we so ashamed of our own body and comparing every part of ourselves with others?
Why do some people over reacted towards nudity?
Why do some people interpret nude as the most unacceptable thing in the world?

After all, nude photography is not as easy as it seems.
How to show the aesthetic value in my poses when I am not wearing anything?
How to capture the best angle to bring out my message in each photo?

I am just hoping we can get back to basic -
on how we see things in the world with no stereotype or judgement.

The Traveller

Dedicated to Izzy, Claire, Maria, Slava, Priscilla, Justus and Catarina,

Inspired by my dearest couch surfers.

Izzy, my first surfer once told us the amazing experience of her Kiwi employer while we were picnicking at Brighton Beach.
Her employer was able to live without any money in his pocket while he was backpacking.
In fact he was working hard and travelling smart at the same time.
Anything is possible as long as we are willing to work hard.

I admire Priscilla's bravery, as she is a real survivor.
It was interesting to know that she is close to one of her couch surfing host and actually travels with them in New Zealand.
The father of this family is a journalist and the whole family travel all around the globe.
Surprisingly all the children were born in different countries.
What a gypsy lifestyle! Priscilla told me she wants to live like a gypsy as well!

We met Tanit and Jordi in Japan.
They said precious items actually bring burden, if we never own them we never have to worry about their safety!
To be able to live freely without worrying about our precious items is one of the happiest things on earth. Their approach has leave a deep impact in my life.
When we were travelling in Japan, we were rushing to cover as many places as we can and took as many photos as possible -- to keep the memories tangible.
On the other hand, Tanit and Jordi were having a fun and just relax while travelling.
Thanks to them, I have learn to take everything easy, always look around and enjoy my surrounding, instead of busy shooting everything with my cameras.
Learning to let go will conquer the biggest fear in our lives.

The best thing of travelling is to share wonderful and interesting stories with family and new found friends. It's not about showing off how many countries one has been to, it's sharing!
Just like when Catarina told us there is an Onion Festival in Switzerland every November and baked us a onion cake, we were so grateful to learn about it this way!

We see European backpackers everywhere and I really salute them for their independent personalities.
They worked very hard since they were in their teens and saved all up for travelling.
On the contrary, most Asian are very family dependent and most of us are unwilling to get out from our comfort zone.

So... to step out of my comfort zone look and like a gypsy, I am planning to do a dreadlocks like Priscilla's and Justus's!
